+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=

For various reasons it didn’t work out for me to join my husband on a sailing trip this week. This is rarely the case and I don’t mind as we do most of our traveling together.  BUT this week is my birthday! and I admit I was feeling a little lonely and put out to have to celebrate it alone. ..So I made a mini plan and am on a road trip to Sedona for three days…. It has been years since I last visited and I found a wonderful spa resort L’Auberge de Sedona that had an open cottage on Oak Creek so here I go. I also booked a solo trek with a guide into the back country for a photography adventure! I am pretty excited now,  but when 6am rolls around and I need to get up for said adventure on Monday  I suspect some of my enthusiasm will disappear! In the meantime, before I got very far from my own house I spotted this old cemetery on a hill that I had never noticed.  It is VERY  unusual. There is no real road to get to it, you need to climb up a steep loosely packed dirt hill, yet there are many graves there – some appearing very old…it also seems part potters field actually, part old and forgotten cemetery and part newly used cemetery! I’m not sure what to make of it; I’ll let the pictures tell part of the story.

A HOO-HOO-HOOT of a Tale….

The Owls of Kit Carson

Based on true events!

 Chapter ~ 1

Once upon a time there was a family of owls that moved into a recently vacated high-rise condo in a very lovely park setting…The Mama owl, being a bit young, naïve and shall we say avante garde chose the very swank and modern condo at 30f Palm Ave. It was a non traditional choice in the Owl community with its open floor plan, giant skylight encompassing the whole roof, and unobstructed panoramic views.  Mama was completely captivated by its sleek good looks without a thought to the family she would have in the near future. Perhaps we can blame her lack of judgment on the very recent and shocking news that she would soon have three owlets! Three! Why she was not quite ready to give up her own late nights out on the town to stay home and care for one owlet not to mention three.

As mother nature would have it, soon the babies were born.. One look and Mama owl was so smitten with her three cream-colored fluffy owlets that she didn’t immediately realize it was going to be a problem to house all of them in a one bedroom studio… As the days passed she grew into an excellent Mother and fierce protector  ever vigilant in her watch. And so the family settled in together for a few short peaceful weeks.  I say few because, well….as we all know babies eventually become teenagers and that’s when Mama Owl’s troubles began…   To be continued…..

As some of you may know I found a hummingbird nest while on a hike at nearby Blue Sky Canyon about two weeks ago and was able to photograph the mama sitting on her nest from QUITE a distance with my 300mm maxed out! I have actively searched for hummingbird nests in the past with no luck at all and now I see why. They are virtually impossible to see even when you know where they are!!

Here again is the original photo of the Mama

Well we were able to get back to the park over the weekend and I was eager to check on the nest. When we found it again I felt like something wasn’t right. There was only one tiny baby peeking out at me and with the big storm that we just had in mind it prompted me to look around on the ground by the nest. Lo and behold there was a baby lying on the ground and at first glance I thought ” Oh no! it’s dead!” But as I watched I could see it breathing. I alerted a park ranger who was nearby and they placed the baby back in the nest. Which I didn’t know you could do successfully. There was barely room for two of them and he perched precariously on the edge of the nest panting from stress. I wasn’t sure what would happen but when we came by at the end of our hike I could see he was now snuggled into the nest more. Good Sign! Today I returned to check on things…no mama in sight ( they need to feed every 20 minutes) so I snapped a few pictures of the nest with both birds snuggled in there tight! Alive! Yay! Here you go let’s all keep our fingers crossed.

Come on!! Are you Kidding me?? …Get over here these are gorgeous!!!!!

Focus 52 Weekly Photo Challenge- Pastel

Welcome to spring,  without a doubt my favorite time of year!! So I know this looks like and orchid but I am here to tell you this is a macro of a wisteria blossom. Who knew those little tiny blooms were actually miniature orchids! : )  Enjoy your Easter weekend everyone, a time of rebirth and hope.

Can you see it yet?

Went for a walk in Blue Sky Canyon yesterday with my Shadow and as luck would have it  timed our trip perfectly to come across a Ranger led hike.  Usually I would make a wide berth as I prefer my nature hikes on the quiet side and not surrounded by a gaggle of people, BUT their first discovery was a mama hummingbird manning her nest! I HAD to stop when I heard that.  It took me a full five minutes of staring from a multitude of angles while the Ranger was pointing directly at the nest for me to finally see it!! That is how well mother nature works to protect her creatures. It was in the center of a tree right next to the path – yet I had to struggle to see it! Oh but it was worth it as you will see below.

Now we have many, many hummingbirds in our yard at home. They come to the feeders regularly but I have never been able to spot a nest even though I have tried many times believe me! I was informed by the Ranger to please not get close at all as the eggs will not hatch if the mother is worried or stressed. I took this with my 300mm maxed out which produced a photo a tiny bit soft.  It was also very overcast and I was shooting into the center of the tree. All in all happy with my result. Her nest is so beautiful I would like my home to look just like it! If this doesn’t put a smile on your face nothing will!                 Limited Edition Prints available here.
